We are excited to open things up with a 10:30am visit to The Houdini Estate in Laurel Canyon. The estate is a multi-acre hillside compound in the Hollywood Hills that most Angelenos have heard of and almost none have been inside. Our friend Kristen Stavola, who manages the Houdini estate for its owners is opening the doors of the estate to us even though the site is effectively closed to the public.
The compound traces back to the early 1900s, and history places Harry Houdini in the estate guesthouse during his Hollywood film period. The property features, grotto-like alcoves, and theatrical terraces. The ruins became a quietly famous locus of seances and spook-lore through the 70s and 80s. William Shatner even hosted a Halloween TV special there back in '89!
Kristen heads the Laurel Canyon Community organization, which makes her a walking encyclopedia on the canyon's 1960s–70s music history as well. After we visit the estate, we will head to the legendary Laurel Canyon Country Store where she will walk us through the history and lore of one of LA's most storied creative enclaves.
The Laurel Canyon Country Store is the rustic hilltop market immortalized by Jim Morrison in "Love Street" as "the store where the creatures meet." In the 1960s and 70s, this was the living room of a neighborhood that changed American music: Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa, The Doors, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, and dozens more calling the same few winding streets home.
At 4:30pm we will gather at the home of Denters Reed Levine and Joe Miale for a private, catered dinner.
Late night, we head to Black Rabbit Rose, a hidden-gem magic cabaret tucked into the heart of Hollywood. We are grabbing tickets for the 9:30pm show.
Sunday, May 3
Sunday afternoon we get early access to Parallax, Wes Palmer's groundbreaking immersive experience on Hollywood Boulevard — a physical space that responds to you in real-time, like stepping inside a living story.
The evening is the main event: dinner and an evening at the Magic Castle, the invitation-only clubhouse of the Academy of Magical Arts. CNN said it best, the "Hardest trick is getting in." We have that covered -- we have a private group reservation — enjoy cocktails, close-up magic, stage shows, and a dinner you won't soon forget.
What's Included: Tour of the Houdini Estate and Laurel Canyon Country Store * Private dinner at Reed & Joe's * Black Rabbit Rose show (9:30pm) * Parallax experience with Wes Palmer * Magic Castle dinner and evening
